KNIVES AND THEIR USES IN THE MILITARY AND COMBAT

Knives played a prominent role in the history of human survival. They played a particularly significant role in war and self defense. Knives were used as a defense weapon in the olden days when warriors traveled to conquer new lands and when warriors defended their own territories. Knives were also useful when hunters looked for food – knives were useful tools for the hunt itself but they were also very useful as protection against wild beasts. Moreover, then – as now – certain militants use knife as a weapon for combat.

In the olden days, the soldier or the warrior was always equipped with various types of knives – both concealed and unconcealed – so that he would have the greatest chance of survival. A soldier carried various knives; the sword, the battle axe, the bayonet, and the dagger are just some of the most popular types. Hammers, pikes and spears usually completed a warrior’s weapons arsenal

Throwing of knives was a standard practice in war and was a useful self defense move. Special knives were used for throwing – these are called throwing knives, of course. The throwing knives were usually thrown from a distance of at least 30 feet; this distance allows the person to be hidden while performing the knife throw. This reduces the risk inherent in close combat. Arrows and spears were some of the other sharp edged weapons that were utilized from a distance.

Military men of old were also fond of tomahawks, daggers and bayonets. Tomahawks are axe-shaped tools that were used in the military as an assisting device. There are specific techniques to use Tomahawks in war. The Gorkha Dagger, on the other hand, is one of the types of daggers used in warfare. The Gorkha Dagger, in particular, was used by the Indian soldiers against the British army. Bayonets, moreover, were used in the days of the American war.

Swords are weapons that hold a prestigious post in warfare. Swords existed and were used since the Bronze Age. Until now, swords are manufactured though its use in warfare has waned significantly.

Swords are thrusting tools that have been used by many cultures throughout the world. It has two edges, one edge is for striking and the other end is for cutting. Sword handling techniques have mainly remained the same through centuries.

Rapiers, on the other hand, are sharply pointed swords. They are much more slender than the typical sword. Their use dates back from the 16th century. Due to their sharp-point design, rapiers are actually used differently from swords. It is also important to note that rapiers varied in design depending on their main use; civilian rapiers were different from military rapiers.

Battle axes are weapons that have been used in the medieval ages and through the renaissance period. There were many models of axes employed and these ranged from the Mammen models through the crusader models. Double-axe weapons were used in the war fields. Pole arms and spears were also increasingly popular in the medieval period. These were common weapons of the soldiers then.
